Our Journey
Sankofa Heritage Collective of Morris County is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that connects generations of the formerly enslaved African descendants to expand and document their contributions to society.
In 2012, we had Center St. renamed as Bishop Nazery Way in dedication of the Bishop Willis Nazery. Born a slave, he ultimately founded the Canadian-based British Methodist Episcopal Church to serve Underground Railroad refugees.
In the same year, Bethel Church of Morristown received its historical remarker with Morris County Heritage Commission. In 2018, we also obtained interpretative panels to outline the history of the church.
In 2017, we organized our first annual Juneteenth celebration. Partners have included: Bethel Church of Morristown, Morris County Park Commission, Church of Redeemer, Morristown United Methodist Church, Morristown Presbyterian Church, County College of Morris, Morris County Tourism Bureau, NAACP of Morris County.
In 2018, we launched our exclusive ‘Ties that Bind’ Exhibit. This was created in collaboration with Morristown Library, Morris County Heritage Commission, NJ Council for the Humanities, and the NJ Historical Commission.
We are currently working with our partners to install interpretive panel for Morris Parks.
